SMART HOME PROJECT
Cutting the cord

THE CHALLENGE

Excited about the possibilities of smart home technologies, but wary of dad’s DIY solutions, this family was excited to explore collaborating with a smart home expert while maintaining agency in the design and functionality of the system. The seamless integration of the system into the home was paramount, creating solutions that would add to both the ease-of-use and design of the home.

THE PROCESS

Connecting with the client at their home, we parsed their living habits and explicit priorities for the system design. Throughout the process, the client remained very involved in decisions on functionality, placement, and overall aesthetic. Our team worked closely with the homeowners to coordinate a smooth transition and stayed on track with the move-in date, working in tandem with the interior design team to get it all done right. Collaboration was the centerpiece of this work, and it resulted in a perfect fit for both parties.

CUTTING THE CORD

THE SOLUTION

Though screen-time was valued, a cable system wasn’t–so we installed a modern smart home system with AppleTV at each video location throughout the home, supported by Sonos audio. The basement media room was enhanced with a gaming system for the kids, giving parents the remote option to lower the volume or shut the zone down at bedtime. Integrated climate control keeps the home evenly warm or cool.

On the main floor, lighting was the protagonist. We created ten custom scenes, easily accessible from both keypads throughout the home as well as the family’s smartphones, set to the activities of the day that matter most: cooking, relaxing, waking up, tv time, away time, and various dinner scenes. The lighting moves effortlessly from the indoors out, where perimeter surveillance keeps the home safe.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Emphasizing smooth integration, TVs were mounted tightly to the wall, paired with custom matching soundbars to minimize visual impact. We created a custom interface to make it easy to use streaming devices. The goal was to minimize the need for third-party providers and focus on streaming services to allow the system to easily adapt to changing tastes over time. The majority of the components were stored in the basement, keeping them out of sight and safe from small hands. The installed system is an agile, seamless solution in an active home that will continue to adapt to the family’s needs in years to come.

This solution included audio distribution, lighting control, IP surveillance, centralized climate control, and a remote-based control system throughout.

ONGOING SUPPORT

Since installation, our team has checked in with the family on the system’s performance on a regular basis to ensure a seamless operating record. The family’s involved, hands-on approach during the design process has meant that the solution requires little adjustment, and our consistent maintenance and software upgrades will ensure the system keeps running smoothly.
